Mandalay and Labutta townships in Myanmar are grappling with a severe diarrhea outbreak, leading to multiple deaths, according to local residents and social welfare groups.
The outbreak in Labutta Township, Ayeyarwady Region, began in October, with cholera cases surging in December. An official from the Karuna Myat Wun Social Welfare Association reported that the hardest-hit areas include some village tracts, where fatalities have been recorded.
โOther townships in Ayeyarwady Region are also experiencing diarrhea outbreaks, though the exact scale remains unclear,โ the official added.
In Mandalay, residents and aid groups reported severe outbreaks in November, particularly in the cityโs slum areas, resulting in several deaths.
The military council announced in November that it had launched vaccination campaigns and diarrhea prevention measures across 11 townships in Mandalay Region.
Earlier in July, at least 600 people in Yangon were hospitalized due to diarrhea, with several deaths reported, according to aid organizations based in the region. Authorities continue to monitor and respond to the health crisis.โฉ
