The Arakan Army (AA) has successfully captured the 563rd Light Infantry Battalion near Gwa town in Rakhine State, according to local sources. The seizure, which took place on December 20, has given the AA control over significant parts of the town, including the police station and other government buildings.
Clashes have intensified in the region, with the AA now focusing its efforts on the nearby 562nd Light Infantry Battalion. The Myanmar military has responded with airstrikes and naval artillery fire.
โGwa was captured this morning. The whole town is now under our control,โ a local resident told RFA.
Some Myanmar military personnel have retreated to the nearby Rakhine Yoma mountain range, where they have established defensive positions and are engaging in heavy artillery fire with the AA. As a result, the most intense fighting is now occurring in the mountainous areas surrounding Gwa.
The AA has been steadily advancing in Rakhine State, and the capture of Gwa represents a significant victory for the group. The group has also been making advances on the Western Command headquarters in Ann, with numerous soldiers surrendering each day.โฉ
