The Arakan Army (AA) has successfully captured the entire Maungdaw Township in Rakhine State and announced an indefinite suspension of river transportation along the Naf River, which serves as the border between Myanmar and Bangladesh.
According to a statement released by the AA on December 8, 2024, they took control of the final outpost of the Myanmar juntaโs No. 5 Border Guard Police Division (Nakhakha-5) in the Maungdaw area at 9:30 a.m. that morning. However, AA reports that members of the military junta and their allies, including armed groups like RSO, ARSA, and ARA, are still active in the area, engaging in ambushes and attempting to escape across the Bangladesh-Rakhine border, through the Naf River, leading to ongoing clashes in the region.
As a result, in the interest of military operations and public security, the AA declared that river transportation along the Naf River (on the Rakhine side) will be indefinitely suspended., effective from 3:30 p.m. on December 8, 2024.โฉ
