All border crossings between Myanmar and China in the Kachin region were reopened this morning following discussions between the Kachin Independence Organization/Kachin Independence Army (KIO/KIA) leadership and Chinaโ€™s Chinese Peopleโ€™s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

The border closures had been in place since around mid-October, following intensified clashes in Kachin, including a KIA offensive on the town of Panwa in Kachin Special Region 1. As a result, China had shut down all trade gates and exerted pressure on KIA leaders to cease fighting along the border.

The decision to reopen the crossings came after a meeting on December 8 and 9 in Kunming, China, between a delegation led by KIO/KIA Chairman General Nโ€™Ban La and a CPPCC team headed by Wu Ken.

Meanwhile, KIA and allied forces have continued their military operations in the region. Since December 4, KIA and allied forces have been conducting an offensive on Bhamo. Reports from military sources indicate that by the ninth day of fighting, KIA and allied forces had reportedly seized control of nearly all neighborhoods where key government offices, police stations, and administrative offices were located.

Further details about border crossing conditions and trade arrangements have not yet been disclosed.
