The Peopleโs Liberation Army (PLA) has recently transferred over 60 displaced elephants to the Taโang National Liberation Army (TNLA) for safekeeping, while continuing to care for more than 70 elephants.
These elephants, along with their caretakers, were displaced from ten timber production camps during ongoing clashes in Mandalay Regionโs Madaya and Singu Townships and began seeking shelter in PLA-controlled forests and mountains starting July 11. This added to elephants from 11 camps previously under PLAโs care in their controlled territories, resulting in a total of 138 elephants under PLA care, as disclosed by the PLA in a statement released on September 3.
A PLA spokesperson explained that the elephants are being protected as national treasures and kept under careful supervision to prevent any harm from poachers. Detailed records are being maintained to ensure their safety. โThe elephant caretakers, along with their families, number over 300 people. While we are involved in ongoing fighting, it is difficult to keep them in one place. The TNLA has also been assisting us in this effort,โ said PLA spokesperson Ni Ni Kyaw.
The PLA also confirmed that the remaining elephants will continue to be cared for by its Battalion 222โs political department. The elephants, including their caretakers, are in good health.
