Singapore has reiterated its call for the immediate release of Myanmarโs ousted civilian leader, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, emphasizing her critical role in national reconciliation amid the countryโs ongoing crisis.
The appeal was made during an informal consultation of ASEAN Foreign Ministers held in Bangkok, where regional leaders discussed the prolonged conflict in Myanmar nearly four years after the military coup.
Singaporeโs Foreign Minister highlighted that the Myanmar military authorities must honor ASEANโs Five-Point Consensus, which includes ending violence, particularly against civilians, and engaging in constructive dialogue with key stakeholders.
โThe violence, especially against civilians, must stop immediately. Constructive dialogue among Myanmarโs key stakeholders is essential for achieving a peaceful and durable solution,โ the minister stressed.
He expressed gratitude to Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa for hosting the critical discussions and supported the possibility of ASEAN c convening a broader meeting involving all stakeholders.
Looking ahead, Singapore pledged to work closely with Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, who will assume ASEANโs chairmanship in 2025, on addressing the Myanmar crisis and other pressing regional priorities.โฉ
