The U.S. Department of State announced on December 9 that Myanmar is among the recipients of the 2024 Human Rights Defender Award, presented by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Other recipients include activists from Azerbaijan, Bolivia, Colombia, Eswatini, Ghana, Kuwait, and Kyrgyzstan.
Secretary Blinken will preside over the award ceremony and deliver a speech on December 10, International Human Rights Day, at the U.S. Department of State. The Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights is also scheduled to attend, according to the State Departmentโs statement.
The names of the award winners have not yet been disclosed. Notably, this award was previously received by Myanmar comedian Zarganar and Rohingya activist Ko Zaw Min Tun in 2011.
