The United Nations General Assembly has decided to continue recognizing U Kyaw Moe Tun as Myanmarโs Permanent Representative to the UN. During the 48th plenary meeting of its 79th session, held on December 6, 2024, the General Assembly adopted a resolution to postpone its consideration of Myanmarโs credentials without a vote, as proposed by the nine-member Credentials Committee.
The Credentials Committee reported that it received two communications regarding Myanmarโs representationโone from the junta-controlled Ministry of Foreign Affairs and another from Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the United Nations in New York. In light of this, the committee recommended deferring its decision, a proposal that was unanimously adopted.
Following the adoption of this resolution, Myanmarโs Permanent Mission to the UN in New York confirmed that Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun would continue to serve as the countryโs representative at the UN.
U Aung Myo Min, Union Minister for Human Rights of Myanmarโs National Unity Government (NUG), welcomed the decision, describing it as a victory for the people of Myanmar.
