Twelve beggars, including a Myanmar national, were arrested during a police crackdown in Bangkok on the night of December 12. The operation followed complaints from locals about the rising number of beggars in the areas, which was seen as damaging Thailandโs tourism image.
The arrests took place along Sukhumvit Road, specifically between the Asok intersection and the Nana area, a bustling economic and tourist hub. Among those detained were eight Thai nationals, two Cambodians, one Laotian, and one Myanmar national.
While all the individuals were charged with begging, the foreign nationals faced an additional charge of illegal entry into Thailand. They were taken to Lumpini Police Station for further legal proceedings, according to reports from Thai media.
Authorities were particularly surprised to find that one Thai woman among the group possessed over 300,000 baht in cash and a bank account containing approximately 1 million baht, which she admitted was accumulated through begging.โฉ
