South Koreaโs National Assembly voted on Saturday to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over a controversial martial law decree that was briefly enacted.
Lawmakers passed the impeachment motion by a vote of 204-85, suspending Yoonโs presidential powers. Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will assume his duties once official impeachment documents are delivered to both Yoon and the Constitutional Court.
The court has up to 180 days to decide whether to formally remove Yoon from office or reinstate his powers. If the impeachment is upheld, a national election to choose his successor must be held within 60 days.
The vote followed a second impeachment motion after a failed attempt last week. While most lawmakers from Yoonโs ruling People Power Party boycotted the vote, some reportedly supported the impeachment during the second round of voting.
The decision marks a crucial moment in South Koreaโs political landscape, with the nation closely watching how the Constitutional Court will proceed in the coming months.โฉ
