The Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) declared on November 28 that it has officially revoked the โKachin Special Region 1โ designation, a boundary created by previous military regimes to consolidate control over parts of Kachin State. The announcement followed the Kachin Independence Armyโs (KIA) successful military operations to take control of the towns in the areaโChipwi, Tsawlaw, Pang War, and Kan Pai Ti.
The KIA began its offensive against the region, which was controlled by militia leader Zahkung Ting Ying, in late September. The final stronghold, Kan Pai Ti, was captured on November 20, bringing the operation to a conclusion.
The KIO stated that the โKachin Special Region 1โ designation was implemented by previous military regimes to entrench their control, creating divisions that weakened Kachin unity. By taking over the area, the KIA aims to restore unity among the Kachin people and promote peaceful coexistence with other ethnic groups in the region.
Additionally, the KIO extended an invitation to local residents and investors to collaborate with them in promoting regional development without concern. The KIO reaffirmed its commitment to rebuilding the region through humane and inclusive approaches, ensuring the economic and social well-being of all inhabitants.
