The United States has imposed sanctions on eight entities, including four companies in Myanmar and Russia, for supplying parts and components to Myanmarโ€™s military, which have enabled severe human rights violations, including deadly aerial assaults on civilians. The sanctions, announced by the Department of Commerceโ€™s ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ฎ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ˆ๐ง๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐’๐ž๐œ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ (๐๐ˆ๐’) on ๐˜๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ญ ๐˜๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ ๐˜™๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ฉ๐˜ต๐˜ด ๐˜‹๐˜ข๐˜บ, target organizations in relation to enabling or directly supporting human rights abuses.

Among the sanctioned entities, ๐’๐ค๐ฒ ๐€๐ฏ๐ข๐š๐ญ๐จ๐ซ ๐‚๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐ง๐ฒ ๐‹๐ญ๐. and ๐’๐ฒ๐ง๐ฉ๐ž๐ฑ ๐’๐ก๐ฐ๐ž ๐‚๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐ง๐ฒ ๐‹๐ญ๐., both based in Myanmar, and Russia-based ๐€๐ฏ๐ข๐š๐ฌ๐ง๐š๐› ๐‹๐‹๐‚ and ๐‰๐จ๐ข๐ง๐ญ ๐’๐ญ๐จ๐œ๐ค ๐‚๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐ง๐ฒ ๐†๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐ณ๐จ๐ง๐ญ were targeted for supplying parts and components to the Myanmar military. These materials have been linked to the militaryโ€™s use of aerial attacks against civilian populations, contributing to widespread human rights abuses.

โ€œHuman rights abuses are contrary to the foreign policy interests of the United States,โ€ said Alan Estevez, Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security. The sanctions are intended to ensure that U.S. technology and resources are not used to facilitate such violations, he added.

In addition to the four firms linked to Myanmarโ€™s military, two Chinese companiesโ€”๐๐ž๐ข๐ฃ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐™๐ก๐จ๐ง๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ง ๐’๐ž๐œ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐“๐ž๐œ๐ก๐ง๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ฒ ๐†๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฉ ๐‚๐จ., ๐‹๐ญ๐. and ๐™๐ก๐ž๐ฃ๐ข๐š๐ง๐  ๐”๐ง๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ž๐ฐ ๐“๐ž๐œ๐ก๐ง๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ข๐ž๐ฌ ๐‚๐จ., ๐‹๐ญ๐.โ€”were sanctioned for enabling human rights abuses in China. The Commerce Department identified ๐™๐ก๐จ๐ง๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ง ๐’๐ž๐œ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ for its role in developing and selling technology that enables Chinaโ€™s public security apparatus to carry out human rights abuses, including high-tech surveillance, while ๐”๐ง๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ž๐ฐ ๐“๐ž๐œ๐ก๐ง๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ข๐ž๐ฌ was cited for enabling surveillance targeting Uyghurs and other ethnic and religious minority groups, as well as the general population.

The remaining two Russian companiesโ€”๐๐“๐ž๐œ๐ก๐‹๐š๐› ๐‹๐‹๐‚ and ๐“๐ž๐œ๐ก๐ง๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ฒ ๐•๐ข๐๐ž๐จ๐š๐ง๐š๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ ๐‹๐‹๐‚โ€”were sanctioned for supplying facial recognition technology used by the Russian government to track and target peaceful protesters and activists. Their products have become key components of Russiaโ€™s mass-surveillance system, according to the Department of Commerce.
