Malaysia, set to take over the ASEAN chairmanship in 2025, has announced plans to establish the Office of the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair on Myanmar. This announcement was made in a joint statement following the 7th Annual Consultation between Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, held today in Putrajaya.
Prime Minister Shinawatra was on a two-day official visit to Malaysia to co-chair the consultation, where the two leaders discussed bilateral cooperation as well as regional and international issues.
During the meeting, the two leaders addressed the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. They reaffirmed their shared commitment to finding a peaceful and sustainable resolution to the situation, emphasizing the well-being of the Myanmar people. The joint statement highlighted their mutual support for the Five-Point Consensus, describing it as the primary framework for resolving the crisis.
Malaysia expressed its intention to establish the Special Envoy Office as part of its leadership role in addressing the Myanmar crisis during its ASEAN chairmanship. The Thai Prime Minister also voiced full support for Malaysiaโs initiative, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts within ASEAN to resolve the crisis.โฉ
