𝗡𝗨𝗚 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗜𝗖𝗖 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗿’𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗿𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗴

The National Unity Government (NUG) of Myanmar has strongly supported the International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor’s request for an arrest warrant against Min Aung Hlaing, Myanmar’s military leader, in connection with atrocities committed against the Rohingya population.

The ICC Prosecutor, Karim AA Khan, officially filed the request for an arrest warrant on November 27, 2024, which was confirmed in an ICC press release. This move comes as part of the ongoing investigation into the atrocities committed by Myanmar’s military, including mass killings, rape, and displacement of the Rohingya population in 2016 and 2017.

The Acting President of the National Unity Government, Duwa Lashi La, expressed support on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “𝘐 𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦 #𝘐𝘊𝘊 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘵𝘰𝘳 @𝘒𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘒𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘘𝘊’𝘴 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘔𝘪𝘯 𝘈𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘏𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘨. 𝘐𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘮𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘔𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘮𝘢𝘳’𝘴 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦, 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘰𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘺𝘢, 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘯 – 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘔𝘈𝘏 𝘪𝘴 𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤, 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴. 𝘕𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸.”

The Prime Minister of the NUG, Mahn Win Khaing Than, also welcomed the request, urging the ICC to expand its actions:

“𝘞𝘦 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 [𝘵𝘩𝘦] 𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘔𝘪𝘯 𝘈𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘏𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘺 #𝘐𝘊𝘊 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘵𝘰𝘳 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵 𝘙𝘰𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘺𝘢. 𝘞𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘰 𝘶𝘳𝘨𝘦 𝘐𝘊𝘊 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵 𝘩𝘪𝘮 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘙𝘰𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘺𝘢 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘰 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘯𝘪𝘤 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴, 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 "𝘈𝘯𝘺𝘢𝘳" 𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘔𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘮𝘢𝘳.”

The Foreign Minister, Daw Zin Mar Aung, remarked on the significance of this moment in Myanmar’s history, asserting on X:

“𝘛𝘩𝘦 #𝘐𝘊𝘊 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘢 𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘔𝘪𝘯 𝘈𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘏𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘢 𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘔𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘮𝘢𝘳 𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺. 𝘏𝘦 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘥 𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘺𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘯 𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵.”

In a Facebook post, in Burmese, she further called for unity among the revolutionary forces, saying: “𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦, 𝘸𝘦 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘱 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘸𝘯. The Minister for International Cooperation, Dr. Sasa, also voiced strong support on X: “𝘞𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦. The ICC’s investigation into the Rohingya atrocities began in November 2019 and has since accumulated a substantial body of evidence pointing to Min Aung Hlaing’s involvement in crimes against humanity and genocide. This includes photographic and video evidence, as well as eyewitness testimonies, demonstrating the scale of the violence that took place from August to December 2017.

As the ICC moves forward with the request, judges will evaluate whether it meets the legal criteria for issuing an arrest warrant. Should the request be approved, efforts will be made to apprehend Min Aung Hlaing and hold him accountable for his actions.⁩
