The ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) has welcomed the International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutorโ€™s application for an arrest warrant against Myanmar junta leader Min Aung Hlaing.

In a statement, the ICC Prosecutor said he had filed an application for an arrest warrant against Min Aung Hlaing for crimes against humanity, including the forcible return and persecution of the Rohingya in Myanmar and Bangladesh.

APHR Chair, Indonesian House of Representatives member Mercy Chriesty Barends, welcomed ICC Prosecutor Karim Khanโ€™s decision, saying that after years of careful gathering of evidence, this action reaffirms the international communityโ€™s commitment to ensuring that perpetrators of serious human rights abuses are held accountable.

Charles Santiago, a former Malaysian parliamentarian and co-chair of the APHR, said, โ€œWe stand firmly with the ICC in seeking justice for the countless victims of the Myanmar military juntaโ€™s atrocities since the February 2021 coup. Accountability cannot be negotiated.โ€

The APHR has urged the United Nations, the international community, and all ASEAN member states to support the ICCโ€™s investigation and prosecution of the junta leader.
