The Arakan Army (AA) has confirmed the successful capture of numerous military junta forces, including Brigadier General Thurein Tun, commander of the No. 15 Military Operation Command (MOC-15), during a major offensive on the Border Guard Police Division No. 5 (NaKhaKha 5 or BGP 5), the last enemy stronghold in Maungdaw Township, Rakhine State. The assault, which lasted nearly two months, was concluded on December 8, 2024.
In the official statement released by AA on the night of December 10, the group reported that Brigadier General Thurein Tun and his personal secretary, Captain Wai Lin Aung, along with several other military officers, soldiers, and junta-affiliated Muslim armed forces, were taken as prisoners, and more than 450 soldiers from the Myanmar military junta were killed during the two-month-long operation. Additionally, a significant amount of weaponry was seized from the base, which had been heavily fortified by the military junta.
The BGP 5, located in Maungdawโs downtown area, was a well-guarded facility housing over 700 soldiers. It was surrounded by multiple layers of barbed wire and trenches and featured more than 100 overhead shelters and reinforced structures. The campโs location near a river provided an added layer of defense. During the operation, over 1,000 landmines planted by the junta forces were cleared.
After 55 days of intense fighting, the AA successfully neutralized the stronghold, successfully securing control of the entire Maungdaw region.
