Thailand will host two separate regional meetings on Thursday and Friday to address border security, transnational crime, and the ongoing crisis in Myanmar, Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Nikorndej Balankura announced on Monday (December 16).

The meetings come as Malaysiaโ€™s Prime Minister emphasized the need to bring Myanmar back into focus within ASEAN.

Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa is set to lead the discussions on December 19 and 20, marking Thailandโ€™s latest attempt to facilitate dialogue following its October offer to host informal talks aimed at addressing Myanmarโ€™s prolonged crisis after the 2021 military coup.

The December 19 meeting will focus on border security and transnational crime and will include representatives from Myanmar, as well as neighboring countries China, India, Bangladesh, Laos, and Thailand, all of which share borders with Myanmar, according to Spokesperson Nikorndej.

The following day, December 20, Thailand will host a foreign minister-level meeting on Myanmar, open to interested ASEAN member states. Since the coup, ASEAN has consistently excluded Myanmarโ€™s military leaders from high-level meetings, only allowing non-political representatives to participate.

Indonesia has confirmed that its foreign minister will attend the December 20 talks.

The upcoming discussions follow ASEANโ€™s agreement in October to support Thailandโ€™s proposal for informal consultations in Bangkok late this month aimed at addressing Myanmarโ€™s political and humanitarian crisis.โฉ
